hey fellas i only weigh 59 kgs and my height is 172 cms.. im pretty sure im underweight so i would like to put on the beef a bit.. and possibly put on some muscle mass while im at it.. i go for runs and shit in the mornings and use weights aswel.. has 1 got any tips or sites that i can go to that will help me out?

mass gainer drink mix works well. I think it's mostly protein. it works well. To check to see if you're over/underweight, you can calculate your Body mass index(BMI) I think the equation is weight squared(in kilos) divided by height (in cm). A healthy BMI is supposed to be between 20 and 25. But, depending on your lifestyle/sport, it may be ok to have a slightly lower BMI than recommnded. For example, I do cross country running and longer races and I had a BMI of 19.4. This is obviusly slighlty low, but considering I do an endurance sport it's not a sign of anorexia or anything like that.

well im glad you asked lmnop as I was in your shoes but did nothing about it till later in life. This is the shit ive learnt over the last year or so
First of all running and all that exercise will burn fat but also muscle so keep it too a minimum. If you want to bulk up you want more muscle but keep that fat down so you dont look like an ex rugby player. Save all that effort for when you want to cut the flab off.
Most important part of gaining mass is to eat more than your body needs of clean, healthy foods. Maccas and kfc is pretty much useless to your body. Shit like that is high in saturated fat and has no use at all. Instead of coke and soda drink water, your body needs heaps of it to function. Space your meals out so your taking in around 6 smaller meals a day so your never hungry but not starving either. Try eating every 3 hours. Diet is the number 1.
Now if your muscles are to grow they need to be put under stress they are not used too. So every time you work out you must try to lift heavier and heavier. If you lift the same every week your body has no reason to grow. Stick to basic compound movements that require the use of several muscle groups. Work out a split where you work each body part a seperate day eg legs monday, chest shoulders tris wednesday, back and bi's friday. So your body then has time to recover and grow stronger/bigger.
It takes a long time to get bigger theres no magic workout that will get you super buff in three weeks. go to www.bodybuilding.com theres heaps of info in there thats helped me out. If websites ask for cash ingnore them

From a surfing perspective though there is no really no huge advantage to bulking up - you would be better off working on fitness, stamina, flexibility and strength and no you don't need to be massive to be strong.
One of the blokes I surf with a fair bit was really big into body building and was massive at one stage. He finds now even though he has not been in the gym for years it causes him hassles when surfing - basically his lats get so big after an hour or so of paddling he loses power as he is stretching his arms out flatter to get around his bulk. OK this is a fairly extreme case but for surfing bulk is just not needed.

fvcking hell he must be big then for that to happen! For the average joe skinny having an extra 10kg of muscle wont be detrimental to your surfing. Its not like you suddenly get ron coleman huge and have to deal with it, the weight slowly comes on so your body adjusts.

Well everyone is different but what ive started doing (well its cold as fvck in the morning so ive been lazy) is some intense cardio. Put on your running shit, do a few stretches and start lightly jogging till your warmed up.
Then sprint like a muther fvcker! as fast as you can for 10 - 15 seconds.
go back to jogging so you can stay alive for another 5mins
then run cvnt run!! for another 10 - 15.
I do around 30 mins of this with about 4 all out sprints. The last ones im completely fvcked up and cant run for shit. Its a real good cardio workout and gets your heart pumping to near its max. Youll find after a while you can run faster for longer. Stuff thats short and real intense is the best for me anyway.

how steep is it lol. I hate running up hills aye plus its pretty harsh on your joints when your going back down. You could try doing short sprints up it, then do a walk then sprint again. People will be going wtf? when they see you though haha. Every time you do it try and go further or faster, its a good way to see if your progressing.
After doing an intense workout (cardio or lifting) make sure you eat a shitload of food after it, since this is the time your body is most hungy for nutrients.

well there is an extremely steep side and a reasonably steep side to it..i walk up the reasonably steep side everyday from skool so i think i will start on that side

yeh thats one thing i was lacking...after my excersise i would only have a big glass of milk and milo, and a peice of toast.. i just sent mum down the shop to buy me some protein suplements..do they work much??

That sprinting sounds like a good way to improve explosive power while being able to keep doing it for ages(like surfing, paddling for wave) but maybe 5 min recovery is a bit excessive. I reckon 30 sec-1min is enough. As you get fitter, I reckon aim to get recovery to 30 sec, and just be able to do more of them. But don't get carried away with sprints (or any running) too heavily too quickly. ease into it over a couple of weeks to avoid injury. I reckon for speed endurance(say if you want to do middle distance running or 400m) do 400m intervals with 2/3 min (or 200m walk) recovery. can also do 200m intervals.
or for longer distance (less speed) 1km intervals. keep in mind these are not anaerobic (sprinting)

im a tall lanky bastad aswell. ive been trying to put on weight for a while but it doesnt do much for me. i eat heaps mostely healthy foods and rarely stuff like takeaway. but im not puting much on either or anything. but mum rekons wen she was younger she struggled to put on weight and both sides of my family are fairly slim. thnk about ure parents and relos and if there all skinny then ull struggle to put on weight. or just ask ure parents wat they were like in thoe youngen days.
oi lmnop the protein shakes work alright, gotta have em before and after you do weights and like have one once a day when your not workin out... just some advice i was given
also do the whole raw egg thing! haha gotta love the taste
im thinking on getting on creatine for a bit, that makes u bulk up heaps real quickly

Protein supplements are made from whey. Which is filtered milk like that saying 'eating your curds n whey' or some shit. The stuff you can buy at the shops is pretty shit, made from low quality whey and filled with sugar. Also expensive for what it is.
Meat is protein so eat that shit up.

dont bother with creatine till you need it. All it does is make your muscle cells hold more water. Get your diet in check and read up before you go and blow your money.
the protein in raw eggs doesnt get absorbed very well. 1 in 10 000 has salmonela too. Its a bit of a myth that its good for you

If you want to do something that will help your endurance and strength without going overboard on the mass swimming is the shit. Also short beach sprint type stuff works (it's one of the main forms of training Occy did before winning the WC 99/2000.) as you get the anaerobic fitness without hopefully burning off too much muscle.

It's simple. 2 words that will increase your endurcance stmaina, help you put on muscle and become way stronger and fitter.
BOXING and BEANS
Go start boxing 3 - 4 times per week. Do it with a proper boxing trainer who will push you hard and have you cranking out 400 situps per night etc... 2 hours before eat a can of baked beans so you have plenty of carbs to burn, then afterwards eat plenty of pasta. Protein is good to help you build muscle so what these fellas said for protein (steak, CHICKEN, FISH, eggs) but it's useless to have protein if you're not bulking on the carbs. You gotta eat plenty of pasta and baked beans and stuff so you don't burn all your protein. You wanna burn your carbs then use the protein for muscle growth. Boxing works all the same muscles you use for surfing plus a normal 2 hour boxing workout usually involves, skipping which cranks your stamina and edurance, pushups, situps, jackknifes, legouts, burpees, etc. You will get hard muscles and you'll surf better. Strecth lots too, getting flexible stops you from tearing muscles and increases your surfing ability.

Bloody hell, don't worry about those supplements and garbage, just get into it.....keep it simple
Chin ups
Push up
Sit ups........all body wieght stuff
bicep curls
arm abductions
bench press
just figure out what muscles you want to build.
Don't do the the same muscle group two days in a row.
See when you do weights you get microscopic tears in your muscle and this is why you feels sore.........your muscle repairs itslef however now bigger
If you do it too much, i.e every day its to your own detriment, it will be more like endurance training and your might just get more toned but the muscles won't have time to repair and hence won't get any bigger (i.e - the way surfing tones and doesn't really make you mr universe)

with all the advice getting thrown around id say some stuff.
Before you go out and spend your money or go and do a bunch of training, first ask yourself what are your goals?
If you dont know what you want and follow a correct diet or training you wont make much progress and end up getting pissed off with all your wasted effort. Dont expect to get much muscle, lose all your fat and be fit as fvck at the same time. Cardio uses a heap of energy which if youve got your diet in check youll lose the flab and get fit as (probly lose some muscle too). Only prob is gaining muscle requires a caloric surplus, ie eat more than your body requires so you can fuel your workouts and have the nutrients for your mucsles to grow.
Myself as a big streak of pelican shit I needed to gain lean mass (muscle) so I:
Dropped almost all cardio (apart from surfing)
Ate a caloric surplus off quality food 6 meals spread every 3 hours (still eat shit but not as much)
Got a decent training workout of mostly heavy compound exercises (such as squats, bench press, shoulder press)
Took a multi vitamin (always something your body needs)
Drank a heap of water (body needs shitloads to funtion best)
Now ive got a nice gut that I need to get rid of so im:
doing intense cardio
lowering the portions of food I eat
training the same
still using multivitamin and drinking heaps of water
Pretty simple just work out what you want and research how to get there.

this is what i do.
for fitness i obvously surf but also, my bigest sport is rugby. i had 5 sessions a week then usually do 3-4 sessions of gym aswell (lunch and befor school.) things that have helped me the most are eating. i eat and incedible amount of food but its always good. what helps me is i cook up a massive thing of pasta at the start of the week, which i take to school each day for a snack at lunch. it taste's good and it gets some carbs in to ya. as far as suplements go, i take on called bod science nitrovol. it has a good mix of carbs, protein, cratene and some other little things. i usually take it befor and after morning trainings and gym because of the protein and the carbs which help u feel not so tired during the day and can help u get through the arvo training sessions or surf. things i do when im in the gym im usally helped by our schools personal trainer, but the big thing to remember is after you've worked one muscle group, work its opisite. example: doing biceps the tricept. bench then seated row. all that type stuff.
basicly what i take for lunch every day is, 2 chicken salad sanga's, 2 muslibars, 2 apples, my serve of pasta, usually some of last nights dinner, a muffin, a handful of red frogs or jelly beans and some other little things like anzac cookies and stuff like that. make sure your eating healthy dinners aswell because i rekon that the most important thing.
i think i just typed to much. probably mostly dribble.

beer is high in carbs so make sure ya drink plenty of that before ya surf. well thats what i do before my saturday and sunday surfs. apart from the cramps and spewing up from all the paddling, it keeps u warmer and ya dont think as much which helps ya chharge it and pull into nasty closeouts.

I'm often still maggot when I paddle out on sunday mornings and find I'll charge anything, pull into anything and not even care when I get smashed and held under. It takes away all fear, and makes everything so much more fukin funny. Only problem is you can never remember the good waves 3 mins after each wave.

i remember the first arvo of schoolies we sat down and knocked off a big bottle of sambucca in about half an hour between 3 of us then thought it woud be a good idea to go for a surf out the front. it was onshore and small but the waves were thumping into the banks, and axing me everytime i tried to get up. i couldnt do shit.

I went for an arvo sesh pissed as on my schoolies. So disorentating out there, dont think ill do it again. As for surfing hungover ive done that a fair few times, prefer not to do it. I get wicked cramps from being dehydrated, tired straight away and kook it more than usual

Hahaone time me n some mates got pissed in the Broken heads camp ground then wandered up that bush track that goes around the headland and somehow lost the path and got lost in that bush and it was dark and we couldnt find our way out so we woke up in the morning with no farking idea where the fvck we were, 1 of my mates was sleeping on a fvcking giant ants nest and woke us all up with his screaming hahaha funny times and it took us about another 2 hours to find our way out and back onto the beach. It was worth it but cause we broke through trees onto the beach to see good looking 4-5ft sets rolling through. Ahhhh good times, i love broken heads, def. one of my fave spots! Thers a couple of decent looking local birds that hang round that camp ground too. My mate tapped 1 of em behind the kiosk there

yeah straddiekid i right. createne just keep more water in ya muscles, which allows them to hydrate quick, which would leave to to lift more in the gym, which then builds ya muscles. but people at school complelty waste their $70 or however much by going on crete's, because they do their loading periods and what ever, but sitll on the weekends, are going out and getting pissed. which is a complete waste. getting pissed just dehydrates your body. so if your spending money on trying to keep more water in your body, the going out and drink which then take the water back out, whats the point? its the same with drinking coffe, coke, and all other types of dehydrates.

OK I was 70kg and looked like a bean pole when I was younger, here is what i did. hit the gym every 3 days that way you get 2 full days of rest, start light at first as you wont be able to move a muscle after your first day at the gym. On those days I did 4 heavy sets of 8 reps on bench press, 4 heavy sets of standing shoulder presses, 4 heavy sets of deadlifts/bent over rows, 4 heavy sets of sqauts,4 heavy stes of leg curls, arm curls for bis and tris.
Food wise eat 6 meals aday it will cost you about 20bucks ady to eat properly, chicken breast tuna round steak rice eggs and milk. you can supplement a protein shake for a meal if you can't eat.
supplements, i took where EAS whey protein isolate, about $70 for a 2kg tub lasts about 3 weeks, creatine monohydrate and vanadyl sulphate and L glutemine.
If you train hard and eat well and sleep properly you should put on 1kg of solid muscle every 10days.
I went form 70kg to now being about 95Kg am not as muscley as i was years ago but am pretty sizable still. It is hard work but picking up chicks in clubs when youlook like a broom is harder.

no that doesnt work. when u drink u dehytdrate your body, so if your on creatne, when your body dewhydrates, it takes water out of ya muscles to try keep hydrating its self. so when u start going on cretes, u go on these loading periods, where your drink the stuff like 4 times a day. thats to get the level of water in ya muscles up to a caertain level. so if you've done all that, go out and get farked up, just drinking water wont put the water back it. you'll have to do a whole nother loading peroid.

At a mates house we were all getting fvcked up as we did on saturday nights before going out. His mum infront of all of us said how damo pissed the bed the week before! hahaha. He was heavy on the piss, come home late and had to work the next day real early. So his mum made the bed for him lol. he goes "No I didnt!" in an attempt to save face, then she replies "YES YOU DID" hahahaaha funniest shit hearing that.

First time I stayed at my gf of the times house over night I was totaly fvcked up from a nearby party. Peicing together the information the next morning I realised that I woke up in the night, brain didnt know where I was. So I pulled of me pants and socks and proceeded to piss all over the bed and pillow, then climb back in and have a good sleep. beer is high in carbs so make sure ya drink plenty of that before ya surf. well thats what i do before my saturday and sunday surfs. apart from the cramps and spewing up from all the paddling, it keeps u warmer and ya dont think as much which helps ya chharge it and pull into nasty closeouts.

i do things i wouldnt usually do when im hungover and dont care... i've taken off on this ugly 6ft beachie closeout cuz i didnt think.. no fear, but the only thing is that my positioning and timing sucked arse and i ate shit
got held down for lots and lots of waves and that sucks hungover. and getting out of the impact zone is a bitch.. but next wave i made it, and best feeling ever.. then i went too high so i got pitched over the falls sideways. that kinda hurt cuz my boards rail hit my shin and i can't surf for a while now.. fuckin hurts!
but hangover surfing isnt too bad on the 'courage' side.. it is a bit of a let down on the judgement, strength & the endurance side. - but courage helps and it will make u charge next time ur sober

i hate surfing hungover but love drunk surfing. i tried surfing a few mornings durin schoolies week, the whole week i dont think i did one decent turn, not to mention my heartrate felt like it was 1000, meanwhile skolling a beer whilst cruisin down the line at cresent was one of the best things ive ever experienced.

Fvcks me man, I dont remember doing it at all. It was one of those nights where I didnt eat dinner, mixed heaps of drinks and thought it would be best if I got drunk as quick as I could. I remember going to bed (it was her brothers bed by the way, he slept on the lounge lol) wearing my socks and pants. But when I woke up my dacks were around my legs and I took my socks off. I was thinking "shit I got sweaty last night" until I realised that im only sweaty on my back, legs and neck (yes I pissed on the pillow too) but not on my chest etc.
First time thats happened, One other time I woke up in the night after getting mega plastered, walked over to the tv and dvd player and proceeded to power chuck all over it. I dunno why I did that, Im looking at my chick going "whats wrong?" not realising what I just did haha
Good times :D This was a few years back. Only time I really spewed or did stupid shit without realising was because she'd wanna go home at the peak of my drunkness. So I blame her lol
