That spot gets heaps of swell, that was a small day, but perfect. There are heaps of good spots in Scotland. The water is a little bit coldd so keeps the crowds down. I wa at one of the most crowded breaks on the weekend and there was about 20 people out in overhead reef waves.

Hey all,

I have been reading/viewing the posts in this forum for a week or so and decided to post a few shots of my own - these two are from a surf trip I took around Oz (for 3 years in total). Nothing epic, but a real nice peak in one shot and hope some of you get a good feeling from the second - you've gotta love searching a coastline like this for new spots!

Cheers,
fisho

03/12/2004, 03:18 PM
farking nice one bruvva.
where were those shots taken?? vicco?
How did ya manage a 3 year trip round aus?

fisho
03/12/2004, 03:46 PM
Hey Ron,

They weren't in Vicco, but I can see how you might think so ... try again! I managed the 3 years with basically 1 year getting half-way round from BrisVegas to the Pilbara in WA - working in Adelaide for 3 months, then Albany on a tuna boat, Perth at the Royal Show, Exmouth (tuna), then scored a gig in a pub for 1.5 years in a great town, but with very little surf (my girlfriend was responsible for this - our Gnaraloo missions meant an 8 hr drive south!). I then spent another 6 months coming back to the east coast via an extended fishing trip over northern Australia!

Needles to say, there were stacks of great waves (and fish) and lots of good memories! It was wicked! I recommend it to anyone!

I might have to scan some more pics in an post 'em!

Cheers,
fisho

thermalben
03/12/2004, 05:55 PM
nah, didn't have enough time unfortunately (scored fun Parsons (http://www.swellnet.com.au/reports/images/25Nov01big.jpg) though).
I'll be back there in a few weeks again and am hoping to slide off for a couple of days, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time.

thermalben

my guess is somewhere along the Eyre Peninsula?
That's kinda like saying "it's somewhere between Sydney and Byron Bay".. the Eyre Peninsula has a lot of coastline with thousands of nooks and crannies.. waves where you really wouldn't expect.

But yes, you're right :)

Slick
03/12/2004, 06:01 PM
yeah i like to start big and narrow it down lol.

my next guess is near port lincoln?

fisho
03/12/2004, 06:12 PM
Keep guessing cutting! :) Actually, I didn't spend much time looking for waves around Port Lincoln ... are there any apart from the beachies to the west? I can't remember!

Yep, thermalben, the Eyre is amazing! I was absolutely blown away by the amount of waves and variety in this area! It was a buzz cruising around searching for different spots! Some I scored swell for and others remain a mystery for next time ... and the whole time me and my mates surfed with no more than 4 other (local) crew in the water!

Oh, and Parson's is filth when it gets like that ... which, in the 3 months I surfed the Adelaide area over winter, was quite often!

Australia has it all!

Slick
03/12/2004, 06:18 PM
does this joint actually have a name or is it just a random break that has never been surfed just watched from the cliff?

fisho
03/12/2004, 06:36 PM
Pretty close with that comment I'd say cutting ... I think you did well to establish it was the on the Eyre in SA ... I'm off to work now (bugga), but I'm stoked a couple of my pics stirred such interest! I might scan some more and start another round of guessing games down the track!

Cheers,

thermalben
07/12/2004, 09:45 AM
nah, I'm only stirring - I don't mind answering questions - it's just a little hard to condense what I do into bite-size-chunks.

However, I don't consider 70-80 hours a week excessive - ask anybody starting a small business, and you'll find that it's pretty standard.

 Way more than that mate. A waterproof housing alone costs around that if not more.

thermalben
11/12/2004, 06:16 AM
Depends what you want. Dave Kelly's custom water housings are over $2K (I have one for my miniDV cam) - but they are very high quality, and have been used by guys like Tim Bonython and Jack McCoy. There are cheaper alternatives, including some waterproof "bags" - but I wouldn't trust them with an expensive camera at all. Then you need the camera - either an SLR (or DSLR) or something smaller and cheaper in the point-and-shoot variety.

yewwww!
11/12/2004, 07:28 AM
yeah i know alex omerod bought a new houseing for his camera a few months ago and he bought a cheap one for $1200 or something like that. camera's and houseings arn't cheap. you can pick up some cheap houseing but for about $300. just the simple plastic casing. but you have to have a pretty pupular camera to pick up one like that.

Nope, you can pick up a good underwater set for around $600. Video cam and still pics. Easy as cake:

- Sony Cybershot 5.5 mega pixels.
-A water proof casing that all good camera shops sell for around $100 thats especially made for sony cybershot.

The sony cybershot its self is a good camera. Just not enough mega pixels to shoot from the shore line. Minium requirement would be 15 megapixels at the least for good on shore filming. But if your in the water and up and close 5 mega pixekls is still pretty far so its pretty cheap to get started up.

Then again JR was talking about caseings that are customly made to fiot your type of camera which I'm sure can get way over $500.

JRsurfer

Ya my mates cost around $2k and thats custom made

xfactor
11/12/2004, 04:35 PM
hey inverted, if 15 megapixels is enough for shooting from the beach - how about using an analog camera? cuz analog dont have megapixels.... does that mean u can shoot from the beach and get it zoomed and have close-up surf to be clear? - i dont have a clue about cameras so yeah

Ranga
11/12/2004, 05:58 PM
Inverted i am 100% sure that you are mixing your megapixle with optical zoom, cause there is no way a camera would have 15 megapixle. my new panasonice has 1.7 megapixle and i bought it for $1500 (cheap as normally around$1750).

Slick
11/12/2004, 06:05 PM
yeah i thought the best digitals were the SLRs and they are like 8 megepixels at most.

yewwww!
11/12/2004, 07:26 PM
yes he's getting them confused. you dont get 15 megapixles. your talking about optical zoom.

JRsurfer
12/12/2004, 08:05 AM
Yeah i thought that sounded a bit off, my cameras only 4 or 5 megapixels and i shoot from the beach no worries with 10x optical zoom. It also has digital zoom but i always find that it fucks up the picture when u use it.

i dont understand how you can ride a wave that shape. i looks at pics like that one all the time and try figure out how it is they made the drop, then could still ride the barrel. when it gets to that shape you just loose your board and end up over through the lip and on to the reef.

but what actully was the point of that picture?

Ranga, the whole trip for only 7 days was around the $1500 mark with accomodation right on the beach lookin straight onto some of the breaks. Apart from the epic surf we had everyday, Tonga is the most boring place on earth apart from scandinavia, plus everything is fairly expensive over there. Still it was well worth it and after surfing in fiji and margaret river, i would still rate tonga the best place to go.
heres a website with all the info and pictures and stuff based on one of the small surfing resorts over there: http://www.surfingtonga.com/

Ranga
15/12/2004, 09:18 PM
hey jb thanks for that. Also wanted to know if you found that 7 days was too short even though it did get boring when you werent surfing, cause i would probably wont to go for 10-12 days to make sure i got something rideable and decent during that break. Reefs stay good all day and how heavy were they?

Jb
16/12/2004, 12:21 AM
yeh when i was there i saw 7 days as being enough for me, but yeh coming back to the surf we have at the moment i guess i should've taken advantage and stayed longer, maybe 10 days. Most breaks are unsurfable at low as it either breaks dry or ankle deep and can get dangerous when 8ft bombs come crashin onto the almost dry reef. but even at high it still hollows out is and is fairly heavy. a couple of brizos over there booged a bit as they couldn't make the take off on their sticks and they weren't particularly kooks either. apart from the low tide the surf was allways consistent throughout the whole day.
