Tripods are definitely useful for lightning shots. Remote controls are great too (wired or wireless .. just as long as you're not touching the camera body).

I noticed we got the same lightning too.. Your second lightning pic has the same bolt as this one:

Your camera should have come with software that can deal with CR2 files. If you're running Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, etc), try installing The Gimp and the ufraw package. Search for it in your package manager, it's a great little tool.

Nice pics Justyn! Love those updrafts. The clear dry air behind the lines of storms yesterday gave great viewing and photo opportunities. Nice lightning capture too. Question though, have you got a filter on your lens? I suspect the strike ghosting is from a filter, though I'm not sure. Personally if I'm photographing lightning that's fairly close (ie. using a lens with zoom <=~60mm), I'll remove the filter to prefent such ghosting (and flaring). I've never used the really expensive (>$150) filters though, so maybe it's just a side effect of cheaper filters. NGP, do you have comments on that?

Here's a few of my pics:

never had any problems with ghosting before, then again I only use the Pro1 Filters.

what happened to your 17-40mm f/4L?
never had any problems with ghosting before, then again I only use the Pro1 Filters.

The 17-40 was/is on the 10D, which I didn't have on me at the time. I've made up my mind, no EF-S lenses, ever again. Lucky (or not? lol) the only one I have is the 18-55. I think it's either another 17-40, or a 24-105, probably the latter.

As for ghosting with lightning, I just had a thought that it may be similar to lens flaring with the sun. Since lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun, I'd imagine it would have similar brightness (all concentrated in one spot, like the sun is), so it may actually be the lens rather than a filter. Experimentation required I think.

NGP
16/10/2007, 03:31 PM
well the 10-22 wouldn't be too bad for a cropped body, but grab a full frame 5D (6D once its's released) with one of those lenses mentioned, it can't get any better then that, for the price anyway :D

lem79
16/10/2007, 07:40 PM
mmmm, 6D

I think I need a professional job already (soon now!). I've got professional taste in equipment, and a basic assembly job just doesn't cut it.

Speaking of large purchases though, I'm super keen for a new PC around December/January. AMD Phenom X4 2.6/2.8 or 3.0Ghz, 2-4Gb of DDR2-1066, nVidia 9 series or ATI/AMD Radeon HD (RV670) series GPU, 27" WS LCD, .... etc :D

Justyn90

Professional or expensive taste?

lem79
16/10/2007, 08:28 PM
Hey what are you trying to get at? ;)

Probably a bit of both. Let me rephrase. I have taste for quality gear. Usually professional gear is of a desirable quality. Quality also usually carries a proportional price tag.

I know you Darthie. This is perfectly understandable for a man of your culture and breeding... I imagine you take long walks on the beach when there is a sunset happening. Log fires when there is no sunset.... a snifter of red and Cuban cigar....

by God... You are quite a man!!!!!

yeah mate... 1600 on that one......

Going back there on Wednesday night to shoot with a 16-35... Be interesting to see the results with a wide-angle lens.....
Yours or someone elses? I thought about that lens but decided to go with the 24 1.4 instead. If i were to get a zoom it would be a 24-70 i think.

Laser eyes, cats are trippy beasts.

Our's is a little pedigree Burmese kitten, best breed in my opinion. Plenty of personality.
