Don sorry to interfere with the coffees, but what do u think of this predicted swell friday and saturday? Thanks mateBen, I'm struggling to see much more than 2-3ft at best, and from what I can see from the latest wind data, the majority of this swell size looks to be aimed further north. So in saying that, I'd say around the 2ft/2ft+ mark for the Goldy for Friday and Sat, perhaps pulsing slightly on the incoming tide marginally, with the SC seeing the upper end around the 2ft+/3ft mark, once again pulsing around the incoming tide marginally.
With wind strengths predominantly around the 20-25 knt mark with a cluster of localised stronger winds in the 25-30 knt mark (as shown below) that's about the best I can see from these tradewinds. One thing which might swing more favourably, is the predicted sustained fetch on the upper flank of this high. This has the potential for an active sea state development, thus it may create some swell on the upper side of the above range, but we'll have to monitor this over the next 12-24 hours or so just to see how sustained this fetch develops.

Without a doubt it used to be the cafe at Mermaid Beach, just near the surf club there on the beach. They used to sell the best breakfast bagels as well. I went there about 2-3 weeks ago and I think it's now changed hands and I have to say that the coffee has gone downhill, from the best around to just average old lattes.

although it looks asthough sydney etc might do better outta it, or will they just bear the brunt of it all with the wind & rain too don?It really depends on where the low forms and then tracks, but latest EC runs are certainly indicating a rather wet, wild and wooly time in Metro and southern NSW later this weekend and into early next week.

if a second low does form further out between fiji & NZ will that do anything for our swell outlook even though there may be one between us & it.. I dont quite understand what goes on there/what happens to the swell coming of its western flank.
From the look of those maps we'll be in for some powerful SE swell from sun/mon till ???

Don do you still think friday morning will see bigger swell along the SC than thursday morning.
I can see a dip in Hsig on the wave rider buoy. I was wondering will this be cancelled out sufficiently by the increase in period being recorded.
Donweather
12/06/2008, 02:58 PM
Don do you still think friday morning will see bigger swell along the SC than thursday morning.I'm hoping so LL as I'll be there myself tomorrow morning!!!
From what I can ascertain from the models we should see a levelling off of Hsig this afternoon, with an ever so slight lift in Hsig overnight, but more importantly a rise in the swell period (only a minor rise, but still a rise nonetheless). So in summary, I'm certainly hoping for similar swell size tomorrow (perhaps half a foot bigger), but with some slightly better quality. Winds look primo anyway so it should be super clean!!
Did you hit your usual SC location this morning? If so, how were the banks?
lollipops and laughalots
12/06/2008, 03:16 PM
Yeah I did. On the low tide it was a little funny. It was more of a shorey. It was super clean and some of the funnest 1.5ft surf I've had. If it picked up a bit tomorrow it might start braking on the outer banks.
Donweather
12/06/2008, 03:51 PM
That's an almost exact bank report to what I got from a mate up there this morning.....only problem is that the low tide is getting later and hence the early morning high tide is also later (hightide 3:45am, low tide 10:15am) compared to this morning so I don't like our chances of it breaking out the back.
So is there a storm bar, the gutter, then shorey? I'm not liking the sounds of it then if that's the case. And the 1.5ft doesn't sound like fun, particularly given the size I saw on the Bcam pics this morning as well. My mate said it was a touch bigger up towards and past the surf club.

12/06/2008, 06:56 PM
I might have gotten confused then. I thought we were talking about Wurtulla. I stayed at Maroochydore but didn't actually check it so I can't tell you much else. Stormbar not sure the waves were peaking but really they were peaking where the sandbank would normally be.

SSE swell 5 – 8ft south facing beaches south of the border, 3 – 5ft Gold Coast open beaches and 4 – 6ft south swell magnets. SSW winds 20 – 25 knots.

Given the low confidence in the positioning and deepening of the ECL in Wed forecast, I'd say the two forecasts are pretty similar really.

So LL, did you hit it this morning? We did. Perfect morning conditions, clean as (in fact it's still blowing NW up there). Looks like there was a slight pulse just after sun up this morning up there based on wave buoy data (swell heights and period).
Just a shame there was a tad too much water on the outer banks. It definitely got better with the tide going out during the morning and that slight pulsing swell.
Saw some dolphins within like 2m of us this morning.....haven't seen them that close up the SC for a while. Scared the crap out of me at first as the first one jumped about 1m out of the water literally 2m away from us!!!
Looks like the calm before the 50 year storm now!!!!

how big donny? looks pretty small on the cams. thinkin of hittin strad for a late arvo sesh as the tide comes up..
Donweather
13/06/2008, 12:18 PM
SC was around 2ft/2ft+ on the outer banks, slightly smaller on the shorey. Pretty similar to the Bcam pics of this morning.
Strad would have been fun this morning. Small, but fun. Wave buoys are indicating slightly smaller conditions down the coast it appears. Blowin W along the Goldy now so an arvo session might be the go.
