Hey guys, check this out and let me know your thoughts..

I took a few pictures back in 2003 of a large swell which graced our coastline. In a few of the photos I noticed waves breaking way off the coast. The camera I used was a Sony Mavica CD1000 2.1mp camera with a 10x optical zoom .. not the greatest quality but ok for the time. Here's the pics:

(click for larger versions)

1. This is looking from the Snapper Rocks hill (Point Danger? can't remember its name) across Duranbah and the Tweed River. The brown water in the bottom of the shot is outflow from the Tweed River. The break I'm talking about is out the back.

2. Same deal as the first pic except with a breaking wave in the foreground.

3. Just to give an idea of the wave size. This is out the front of between Froggies and D'bah.

And here's the link to BurlieghCam's report for the day:

I've tried checking Google Maps to find this break, but I can't seem to see it. Has anyone surfed this break? Looks like a nice left hander (see the pic where I've kept a portion of the photo at original resolution).

Thoughts? Or even better .. anyone got any pics of this close up? Looks like it only works in swells that are 2-3m+.

I flew over the general area on the way to land at cooly last Friday and it was fully breaking. It has a name and has also been on the box last year with a few blokes towing into it. Killer paddle but ;)

It's called 9 Mile Reef (popular diving spot too), and, according to those who have surfed it, it's really heavy. Needs to be quite large with light winds.

9 Mile Reef, thanks Ben.

Bill: yeah looks like a decent paddle to get to it!

I'd love to see some close up pics of this break. There's something special about offshore and/or remote breaks, but I'm not sure what. Personally I'm terrified by any wave over 3ft (drowned in a past life or something, who knows), but still attracted to the ocean.

I was joking about the paddle mate. There's no way you'd paddle to '9 mile reef'. Your arms would fall off...
