Well as most of you who obsess over me would know I drove down to Yamba Friday night after work to get away from the coast, score some waves, get some rewts and check out the place. After missing my turnoff and driving a further 20 minutes I was pissed off, tired, hungry and getting ready to ram this muther fcuker around some elderly people. Finally get my shit sorted and im having drinks at this chicks place while laying out some smooth as shit lines as only exbuno can do. After getting well trollyed I retire early as tomorrow (and the surf) awaits.
Saturday: Got up pretty early about 7am QLD time (been getting 4 –5 hours sleep a night during the week so I need to sleep in a little) had some breaky and got the chick to take me to all the breaks she knew of. Waves were around 2ft with the odd bigger one but fairly consistent at this beachy we drove past. At the top of the headland there’s a reef that looked the goods with solid waves and a dry end section. This is probably the wave that gets discussed here (the one out from the pub).
Checked out some other places but the swell wasn’t really pumping enough for it to be working well. I must say though that Yamba has a shitload of potential (as did angarie), heaps of reefs and ledges, good banks and best of all hardly anyone out. Decided to surf that reef out from the pub, were about 4 other boogers out, one with an underwater camera set-up. Pretty fcuking sketchy surfing low tide break for the first time that’s shutting down. I now realise im an uber kook as these groms are going hard. Scored a few rides, and im pissed I didn’t go deeper. Not surfing for so long with no reefs has made me much more of a pussy.
After all this the chicks housemate finished work and we all got drunk and blazed and they showed me all the little towns and places to see. I think we were driving around for 3 hours. I was to messy to do anything that night so I passed out at 9.30 and woke up at 9! Holy shit I slept for ages. Checked the surf again but it had dropped off more and the wind was up, just went for a body bash at a beachy for some fun.
We had some lunch at this small town (if you could call it that). It was a pub and a general store (population 380), where the only way in was to drive on a ferry and it takes you across, pretty fcuking cool I thought. After this we drive out to brooms head, it’s a little holiday town with a few houses a caravan park and this lookout. Now one of the girls decides we should go out to this other camping place, Sandown I think it was called, can’t really remember. Its out on a river mouth and the fishing would be sic. I wasn’t really in the mood for more driving but im glad we did. There was this lone brumby standing there by the road. Was a patchy brown and white, real cool seeing this as ive never seen a wild horse before. As the story goes, this horse playa had a bunch of ho’s (we’ll call them mares) but there was a fire and god layed out his pimp hand down taking out all the mares. Now this horse just bums around eating grass looking for pussy.
Its late arvo now, I go for a swim in the pool, tag that chick one more time and head on my way back to the coast where im greeted by my dumbass housemates giving me shit about going all that way for a chick. While part of the reason was for her (she has been up here to see me and go clubbing so I returned the favour) I mainly did it for myself. I wanted out of the drunken haze of surfers, the monotonous clubbing night after night spending money for a hangover - not all experiences should consist of this. They missed out not I.
I had an awesome time, seeing all these little towns, checking out all the mad breaks, getting blazed driving around meeting some cool people.
