After being shot down in a ball of flames for my hurricane solution I have turned my attention to the elimination of all things nasty and unwanted IE cane toads and those friggin little midgees that bite your ass off at dusk.
How about the CSIRO genetically modify the male of the sepcies so that he can not produce females, when he shags a female the y chromosone is turned off so that the only offspring produced can be male. The new born males will also carry the silent Y gene too meaning that they to can only produce males. If the government was to release a few hundred thousand of these genetically modified frogs they would over time breed them selves out. It might take 20 years to do it but hey will eventually lead to no toads saving our wildlife from disaster. Cane toads produce about 3000 tadpoles 3 times a year so each modified frog can produce about 9000 mutants a year do the maths on that. After a few years it will be hard to find a chic frog to shag.

I think some work has been done with this theory already. Good idea though. Id like something similar to that rabbit disease a few years ago where all the rabbits went blind and got fvcked up. It would only take a few disease riddled toads to infect the toad population

the farken toads would probably find a way around it like the rabbits did. probably start producing a-sexually or something. evolution and mutation is a crazy thing.....
i'd have to say better then the last one though dazza.

Darryn, if the male had the Y chromosome turned off, wouldn't that mean the only possible offspring would be female? Female is XX, male is XY. To produce male offspring, the female donates an X, and the male must donate the Y, otherwise the result is XX..
Either way, it would work if the Y chromosome was disabled, since it removes one of the sexes, and both are required for reproduction, unless the damn toads mutate and become asexual reproducers :?

Ya right lem I am a dumb carnt got me xs and ys mixed up, But I couldn't see how they could geneticaly alter themselves to produce a sexually in such a short period of time, I reckon it is a goer, apply the same thing to those bloomin fire ants too while we're at it.

Haha, I was joking about the asexual reproduction thing, I don't think it's actually possible in such an advanced species (relative to say bacteria and algae).
It would take a great number of genetic mutations to enable toads to reproduce asexually, and depending how those mutations came about (human intervention? I'm not sure if we're clued up enough to make a sexually reproducing species able to reproduce asexually), the chance of broken genetics is humungous. More likely than not, the toads which started mutating towards being able to reproduce asexually, would actually die along the way.
Is someone aware of species which can reproduce sexually and asexually that are equivalent or greater than toads?

yeah there is plenty isnt there? alot of marine life can produce sexually and asexually cant they? im pretty sure sea horse's can. they are a pretty advanced species. or maybe they are only asexually.
