View Full Version : A solution to hurricanes??

After watching the disaster of the the hurricane that destroyed teh gulf of mexico and the new storm that is about to demolish whats left I thought of an idea that can eliminate hurricanes. Bullshit you say well think of this.
Everyone knows that hurricanes and Cyclones can only form and be sustained in an area where the water surface tempreture is higher than 27.2 dgrees celcius right. So how about they build hundres of oil rig type platforms in hurricane prone waters but instead of them drilling for oil they have these prongs that extend into the water 15-20 metres and cool the water like a huge ice block, make them solar powered and by day and night they cool the water that passes them would cost a heep of cash but isn't that better spending on preventing disasters than wasting money cleaning up, and who needs a friggin space programme anyway what a waste of money that couild be way better spent.
Just an idea. Oh and who wants to by a gas company to put the oil companys out of business cause I got another idea I'll share that one later.

because of currents and wild life would get fucked up. The barrier reef is a good example of an environment that could die if water temperatures changed.
Anyway, its america, they are already fvcked

Darren, I gotta say that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. There are so many flaws in your proposal - I don't know where to start. Hurricanes are a naturally occuring phenomena, and are a by-product of a whole series of events further down the atmospheric chain. By disrupting the natural environment, you only divert the energy elsewhere, and the ecological damage done to the marine environment would be catastophic.

can't be that bad of an idea jeez Dr karl thought it would work. Just like my idea to stop the mars explorer from crashing into mars??? well mars ain't got an atmosphere so how would a paracute slow its descent to the planets surface? no atmosphere no presuure no resistance = no slowing= crash.
I think I need a surf too much time to think otherwise.

I like ya idea Dazza, just in reverse.
Lets heat the coral sea up 24-7 365 days a year and have spitting cyclone swells year round.

i was about to say the thing. was one of the worst idea's ive heard come out on here. i thought he was joking or taking the piss out of someone. but were u actually seroious? do u go to school or anything darren? or does your school do any type of science in its younger years?

fkn oath I am serious you think about it for a while,
It is entirely possible that you can cool the ocean surface temp to eliminate hurricanes, the exact same weather conditions exist in areas of non hurricane prone areas the only diff is water surface temp. When I asked Dr Karl he said he would talk to the CSIRO to see if it would be possible, quess what his answer was????????? YES but not yes from Dr Karl but yes from the top science organistaion in this country, it would be possible but financially impossible. So to you stupid fuks that reckon it is a dumb idea go and get an education.
My school your school fuk man I left school what 16 years ago, makes me about 33 i reckon.

Can you ask Carl if my idea will work??
I have expanded on my idea:
I believe that i can secure funding from government and help with our Kyoto targets as well. To secure said funding, I will show the benefits of increased cyclone activity;
1. Everyone agrees that the supabank has been a great success and has brought millions of extra dollars into the local GC community. Imagine if there was more swell at snappsy :D . there'd be way more crew coming here for there trip away instaed of indo, fiji...etc. More money in local economy blah blah blah...
It must be noted that this is a deffinate con in the Pro's and Con's of my theory, who wants more punters at snappa :!: oh well maybe Kirra will still be the poor ugly step sister and not get the coverage but still shine for those less after the "I surfed supa wank" kudos.
2. The swell generated can not only be harnesed by guys riding 6'-10" semi guns, but also by Wave Activated Hydro Power Stations. This is where the Kyoto agreement comes in. The carbon credits that this will give Australia will be enormous, plus the Coal community will be happy cause they can export more black sooty producing gear to the OS market and get better return therefore increasing our export earnings. Add to this equation the use of Wind Power Generators and the amount of renewable energy that will be produced will significantly cut our greenhouse emissions.
3. The method of power production that i have specified above will be used to help heat the ocean. Though it would be fanciful to think that the power in will equal the power out, in a perpetual energy type o deal, i still believe that the power bill would be manageable given the other benefits described in ponts 1 and 2.
And thus concludes my theory.
All are welcome to pick the shite outa it. All i can say is If only....

No it's not - well, not without diasterous consequences to the world's climate (can't image there were many hurricanes in the Ice Age, eh?).
Sorry Darryn - I still reckon it's a "dumb idea". You're thinking about one small part of the hydrological cycle - there's a lot more contributing to significant weather events such as Hurricanes than just SSTs alone. What's next? Someone gets a little shitty 'cause they got some hail damage on the car? OK! Wipe out all hail-producing thunderstorms. While we're at it, bugger off those pesky NE seabreezes too - only ever chop up the surf and bring in the bluebottles. And those cold night can bugger off too - while we're cooling down the oceans, lets heat up the land a little more so I don't need that extra blanket at night.
Hurricanes are kinda like bushfires - as destructive as they are, they're a natural part of the environment and we have to learn to live with them.

No. I want to heat the fuck outa the water in the coral sea to make cyclones happen...sheesh, isn't it clear enough for ya??
I will make a mockumentry of my efforts and sell it and become extremely rich  And my plan willl bring joy to all who surf. Too bad about the houses being washed away in cairns and townsville, there's all ways some casualties, but they will be happy when they no that surfers are scoring EPIC waves..

Why not chop up the great barrier reef so its surfable. Then charge any touro about 1000 bucks to surf it a day. In about 10 years we will have enough money to make a new barrier reef. This time lets shove it in brizzo.

I htink tat may be true. I learnt that that is the case at uni(for someone who I noticed asked what I am doing there-marine studies, coastal management) and that the sea temperature may rise as much as 5 or 6 degrees by 2100.

Of course its correct thats 100 years away. Its called Global Warming.

30/09/2005, 12:32 PM
which shows how badly we are affecting the global warming, 100 years isn't really that long and 5 or 6 degrees is a huge amount for sea temp to change
